Greyfriars 800th Anniversary Walk
Pre-book (on the day)
Greyfriars 800th Anniversary Walk led by Tom Hassall OBE
In 1224 the Greyfriars came to Oxford. Until the Dissolution their buildings in St Ebbe's were some of the most impressive in the medieval town, while friars such as Roger Bacon played a major role in the intellectual life of the University. The remains of the Friary Church and Conventual buildings were excavated in advance of their destruction by the original Westgate Centre and its more recent extension. This walk will commemorate the Anniversary and explore the lost topography of the Friary.
The walk will conclude with a visit to the basement of Sainsbury’s to see the only surviving remains of the church.
