Oxford Castle and Prison

Oxford Castle and Prison

Free tours every 20 minutes from 10:00 to 17:00. These can be booked on the front desk on a first come, first served basis.

When William the Conqueror invaded England and won the Battle of Hastings in 1066, Oxford Castle was marked by the Normans as the ideal place for a motte-and-bailey castle. Over time, our site transformed from a castle into a prison. Today, after one millennium, Oxford Castle & Prison is one the most unique treasures of our city.

Step inside and do 1000 years of history! Free tours every 20 minutes from 10:00 to 17:00. You can reserve your spot for all Sunday tours from 10:00 at the Castle, first come, first served.
