Oxford Water Walks
Pre-book (on the day)
Canal and Castle Walk, Tours at 12-1pm and 2-3pm
The Oxford Canal was one of Britain’s first four trunk canals, and its completion in 1790 placed Oxford firmly on a nationwide waterway network which facilitated the country’s spectacular 18th-century industrial and commercial growth. On this short walk the many interconnections between the canal, the adjacent streams, and Oxford Castle will be explained by local historian Mark Davies, author of Stories of Oxford Castle, with reference too to the canals’ great 19th-century transport rival: the railway.
Sign up for this walk on the day at the Oxford Preservation Trust hub at Oxford Castle and Prison.
