Silk-screen Printing and T-shirt Upcycling Workshop
Drop-in - bring your own t-shirt and tote bags
This Oxford Open Doors, Oxford Preservation Trust is featuring a special event designed by and for young people. On Saturday and Sunday a silk screen printing studio will be set up in the 1,000-year-old Oxford Castle. Young people are invited to step through the doors of this historic venue, bringing their old t-shirts and tote bags to give them a new lease of life.
The silk screen workshop will be led by the celebrated Oxford graffiti artist, Mani, who will help you customise your items using stencils of the iconic sights of Oxford, such as the RadCam and the Headington Shark. This event will be a unique opportunity to learn about silk screen printing, and is guaranteed to inspire your creativity whilst you get hands-on with something new. Don’t worry if screen printing is completely new to you, this workshop is designed to be accessible for beginners and will be good fun whatever your level of experience.
Once you’ve finished printing your tote bag or t-shirt, it will need to dry. You can use this time to complete the Hidden Heritage Self-Guided Graffiti Trail, which is designed to take you around Oxford City Centre to discover examples of graffiti throughout the ages. From etchings in church pews and markings on street walls, to political slogans left by angry students over 100 years ago, this tour will lead you through the social and political worlds of graffiti in Oxford’s history. You’ll get an insight into the everyday lives and issues of those who inhabited Oxford in the past: a living history that still exists alongside us. The trail is easily walkable from Oxford Castle, making it the perfect way to pass the time whilst your silk press creation dries.
