A Day Exploring Bath’s Past, Present, and Future
The OPT Team recently spent an inspiring day in Bath, delving into its rich architectural and cultural heritage. Our first stop was the newly restored Beckford’s Tower, where we were welcomed by the Bath Preservation Trust team, including their CEO, Alex Sherman. This iconic Grade I listed landmark has recently undergone an extensive and sensitive restoration project which not only conserved the Tower’s historic fabric but also reimagined its purpose, incorporating sustainable energy solutions and providing a deeper narrative of its history, including William Beckford’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.
Next, we visited the Holburne Museum to explore its contemporary Eric Parry extension. This striking addition blends modern design with the museum’s historic fabric, demonstrating how heritage buildings can evolve to meet 21st-century needs.
Finally, we met with Rob Campbell, Head of Culture and Heritage for Bath and North East Somerset City Council, to hear about the exciting plans for a new Fashion Museum in the heart of the city. With Bath’s legacy as a hub of style and design, this project promises to be a transformative addition to its cultural scene and will be an impressive reuse of the Grade II listed former Post Office.
