Gabriel Pippet Mural Conservation at the Oxford Oratory
We’re excited to announce a new event has been added to our programme! Join us on Monday 24 February, at 6.30pm for a talk about the restoration of Gabriel Pippet’s Murals in situ at the Oxford Oratory.
This project, which won a certificate in the Building Conservation category at the 2024 OPT Awards for Cliveden Conservation and the Oxford Oratory, showcases the stunning transformation which has returned to view two large polychrome wall paintings hidden beneath modern paint since the 1950s.
The murals, which depict scenes from the life of St Aloysius Gonzaga, were meticulously uncovered and restored by Cliveden Conservation. Using advanced techniques, including Arbocel (paper pulp) applications to gently lift overpaint without damaging the original layers, conservators brought the vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and shimmering gold leaf back to life.
This special evening will feature Polly Westlake, Senior Conservator at Cliveden Conservation and Fr Benedict Manning of the Oxford Oratory. They will share fascinating insights into the restoration process and significance of this remarkable project.
