Wolf Hall a triumph in the Painted Room
Last week, members of Oxford Preservation Trust were treated to a captivating evening in the Painted Room, as Dr. Janet Dickinson and Dr. Lynn Robson delved into Hilary Mantel’s acclaimed Wolf Hall trilogy. The talk explored the literary brilliance and historical depth of Wolf Hall, Bring Up the Bodies, and The Mirror and the Light, shedding light on Mantel’s transformation of Thomas Cromwell from a static historical figure to a dynamic, complex character.
Dr. Dickinson, an expert in early modern history, and Dr. Robson, a specialist in early modern literature, formed the perfect pairing, blending historical rigor with literary insight to spark a lively and thought-provoking discussion.
Set against the backdrop of the Painted Room – a location steeped in Tudor history – the event resonated deeply, reminding us of the power of historical fiction to reimagine the past while questioning the boundaries of fact and narrative.
